NEED TO BUILD A FERMENTING RACK

So I’ve been experiencing some beer loss when i rack from different vessels, so I decided I’m going to build a fermenting rack. Basically my theory behind this is since I need to tilt my carboys at an angle to get as much beer as I can before I start picking up sediment then why not build a rack to hold them at that angle throughout fermentation. My only current worry is whether the airlocks will work at a slight angle so I’ll need to play with that. Also whether it will have any adverse affect on the yeast, but I wouldn't think it would. But definite benefits are the yeast cake will pack tighter and out of the way in the corner and I can get better efficiency, and I won’t have to hold a full 5 gallons of beer at an angle while I transfer. This will hopefully improve the process and make things easier, I’m going to try it on the next brews and see how it works…..

  1. airlock and yeast should work provided you set it up right. Have you tried kegging through a filter?

  3. if you put on a pass-through/bulkhead flexible tubing fitting at your air-lock hole, you could just connect the airlock through some flexible tubing and build a clamp into your rack to hold it upright. i'm not sure there's enough clearance in the airlock to have it tilted at 45 and still work without jamming when properly filled.

other thing is..maybe you could add an upside-down funnel to the bottom of the fermentor when you rack the wort. i think this should minimize yeast cake in the area under the funnel and allow you to get the very bottom. if the cake packs tight enough around the edges at the bottom of the funnel, it should provide some filtration action between the inside of the funnel and the rest of the fermentor...just need the funnel to have a large mouth and depth of a couple inches so the small opening is still available to get your siphon into without piercing yeast cake. shrug...though, this may not work with the secondary

  4. good idea lewis i could use a "remote" airlock hmmm have to go to homedepot see if i can find the fitting i want.

upside down funnel?? i have carboys for both fermenters even my primary now, i'm thinking you mean if i was using a bucket.
